I love the AVR Dragon. Have I said that before? Well, I’ll say it again. At $50, you get a JTAG debugger, and it just doesn’t get any better than that. I think the JTAG-ICE cost like $300. And it’s not just for JTAG, it can do ISP and HVPP. It doesn’t support as many devices as the STK500 does, but that’s not too big of a deal. I seem to be sticking with Mega32s and related, which it supports just fine.
Anyways, I added a ZIF socket and some pin headers to make it easier to work with. I purchased the ZIF back when I got the STK500, cause I intended to replace the socket in the STK500, but I never got around to that. And at $20 for a ZIF socket, it was just too costly to mindless waste. So this is a good use for it. And I got some pin headers and jumpers from SparkFun, so I can strap in anything needed.
Here I’ve got a Mega162 strapped in to the JTAG, to debug my latest clock project. Bonus, I don’t need a separate power supply, cause I can just strap the Dragon VCC over to the target. Since it’s just the AVR, I’m not worried about the current draw on the USB port.
