Magnetic microphone?

Posted By azog on May 11, 2009

While browsing for Soviet memorabilia on eBay, I found a microphone with a pretty steep “buy now” and a “best offer”. I figured why not, and cut it in half. expecting the seller to decline. Well, he didn’t.

What I got was an interesting microphone that I am hoping to convert to “modern” use. But now I’m not so sure.

Since I can’t read Cyrillic, I have no idea what it says, assuming it is the manufacturer. I’ll have to see if I can find some translation.

For starters, the connector is a three-prong style I’ve never seen

Only two of the wires were actually run into the microphone base. One of them is just hanging loose. When I disassembled the mic, the two wires are connected, you can see them sticking out on the left and the right.

On a whim, I just soldered on a 1/4″ mic jack and plugged it into my PC, but I didn’t expect it to work. Nor did it work. I figured I can either get it working as is, or try to replace the inside with a modern mic element, so I disassembled it further.

It’s a magenic microphone?

Not that I’m a huge font of technical information, I just never heard of one before.
